Introducing the Free Turbonomic Cloud Cost Control

One of the fun projects that we’ve been working on at Turbonomic is putting a new, free SaaS offering online to let you test out part of the Turbonomic Cloud Cost Control capabilities in the platform.  This is a quick walkthrough of the first generation of the platform.

Welcome to Cloud Cost Control by Turbonomic

Getting started is easy.  Navigate in your browser of choice to c3.turbonomic.com where you’ll see this form to register or login.  Assuming you are registering for the first time, here is the process.  Fill out the form with your email to get set up with a new user account:

Submitting your email will get you set up for a follow up email to confirm your registration:

The email contains a nice easy link to complete your registration:

Back at the website, you’ll be able to fill in the information to complete your account configuration.

Just a little more info and you’re ready to get started.  Make sure to set a good password.  There is a password complexity bar on the page to help let you know when you’ve selected something a little more secure:

You’re in!  Time to get rolling.  The first iteration of the product at the time of this writing includes the Manual Entry portion of the application.  There is an Auto-Discovery feature that is going to be delivered in the next version.  You can use the link in the Auto-Discovery tab to download a Turbonomic instance for doing a guided discovery within your environment.

Let’s use the Manual Entry:

The application configuration screen is set up to allow you to define the requirements by CPU core, Memory, Operating System, and Storage configuration:

Once you submit your application sample, the web application will go out to a SaaS instance of Turbonomic that is querying the real-time pricing and performance data from Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure.  More cloud options will also be coming in the next iteration of the application: 07-getting-results

The results display with the real-time placement and cost data to host your instances.  This also leverages the reservation capability within Turbonomic so that you can actually retain the reservation and deploy an application.

The goal here is to illustrate pricing and performance for each instance.  If you were to run the same configuration through C3 again, you will probably get different results.  That’s why C3 was developed so that we can show how real-time fluctuations in price and performance can only be controlled through autonomic software.

You can export the results to PDF using the button at the top right of the results window.

This is the first generation of this free offering.  What we can see in the coming few weeks will be more around how you can also leverage this platform using a direct API call.  Plus, we can see how to take the very same capabilities that are being used with C3 and put those into your own Turbonomic instance.

If you have any questions about the C3 platform, let me know.  You can also bring any questions to the Green Circle Community which is where all of the Turbonomic engineers will be able to answer any questions and take any feature requests that you’d like to see in C3 and in the Turbonomic core.
